Ancient Escapes

Any travel bucket list without Egypt on it is incomplete. Egypt is far beyond just a desert and pyramids. The ancient history is unparalleled and simply spectacular, but this country has much more to offer. Since Egypt has been overshadowed recently by other destinations, it is the perfect time to visit. While the heat in summer is tremendous, heading over there when tourists aren’t flocking everywhere is unique. Egyptians are some of the most hospitable people I’ve ever met, genuinely wanting to make sure every aspect of their country is enjoyed.

There are two stunning hotel options in Cairo to start the trip off. Egypt isn’t exactly in the way of anything, so chances are it was quite a journey to arrive, making the choice for the ideal hotel that much more important. The Mena House could not be located in a more superb location, overlooking the ancient world wonder, The Pyramids of Giza. Another spectacular option is the Four Seasons Nile Plaza, which is only a five minute drive from the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities. The wonderful pyramids are best seen by horseback or on the back of a camel. Entering the pyramids is incredible, much more eerie than I was expecting, entering the main chamber where the empty sarcophagus of Ramses II stood alone is enough to cause goosebumps up and down your spine. A very exciting addition to the world class museums located in Cairo is The Grand Egyptian Museum that finally opened in 2020. Once your mind has come back from traveling to ancient times enjoy a unique dining experience in Revolving Restaurant, the highest rotating restaurant in the Middle East with extraordinary views over Cairo. Another unmissable meal is on the Four Seasons Nile River Dinner boat, a different way to see the city and enjoy an exquisite meal directly on the historic river.

The second part of the trip is driving or flying to Aswan and Luxor to visit the ancient temples. After checking into the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan, it is time for a cocktail overlooking the river. Along with visiting the ancient sites of Abu Simbel and Philae Temple, renting a felucca and sailing across the Nile and jumping on camel back to the Monastery of St. Simeon cannot be missed. Finally, an experience that isn’t widely publicized but is well worth it, is heading to a neighboring Nubian village to share a local tea with the native inhabitants.

Lastly, it’s time to leave the ancient world behind and heading to Sharm El Sheikh, no trip to Egypt is complete without visiting the Red Sea. The Four Seasons Sharm El Sheikh is one of the most beautiful hotels in the world. The rooftop restaurant overlooking the open sea or enjoying a Bedouin meal under the stars is exceptional. This part of the country is known for it’s unmatched diving and snorkeling, there are countless spots from the famous Blue Hole to various wrecks. Day trips to Mt. Sinai and the Coloured Canyon are popular as well.

No matter where you go in Egypt, the Egyptian people will captivate you, not only with their desire to share their ancient wonders, but also with their extraordinary warmth and hospitality.
